What moves the gold price (XAU/USD): the main drivers explained

By World Macro News ยท Updated 2026-10-26

Gold pays no interest and has no earnings, so its price comes down to how attractive it is compared with other places to keep money, and how much demand there is for safety. Spot gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, which traders write as XAU/USD.

1. Real interest rates

The real rate is a bond yield minus expected inflation. When real yields rise, holding a metal that pays nothing costs more in lost income, so gold tends to fall. When real yields fall, gold tends to rise. That is why gold often reacts sharply to US inflation data and Federal Reserve decisions: both change what traders expect for rates.

2. The US dollar

Because gold is priced in dollars, a stronger dollar makes it more expensive for buyers using other currencies, and the price usually eases. A weaker dollar usually helps gold. The link is strong but not fixed: in a global panic gold and the dollar can rise together.

3. Central bank buying

Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset, and several have been steady buyers in recent years to diversify away from the dollar. Their purchases are slow and large, so they act as a floor under the market rather than a day-to-day driver. The World Gold Council publishes the official figures.

4. Geopolitical and financial risk

Wars, sanctions, trade fights, banking stress and doubts about central bank independence push investors toward gold as a store of value. These moves can be fast. They also tend to fade if the risk eases, so it helps to separate a one-day headline spike from a lasting change.

5. Inflation

Over long periods gold has held its value against inflation, so high or rising inflation can attract buyers. In the short term the effect usually works through rates: if hot inflation means the Fed keeps rates high, gold can fall on the release even though inflation is rising.

6. Investment flows and jewellery demand

Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) let investors buy gold through the stock market, and their holdings show whether money is flowing in or out. Physical demand from India and China, especially around festivals and weddings, matters more for local premiums and the longer trend than for intraday moves.
